Summer Number Clip Cards Build Counting and Fine Motor Skills
These printable cards give preschoolers practice counting from 1 to 10, recognizing numerals and using clothespins, with color and black-and-white options.

Summer number clip cards turn a short counting exercise into a hands-on activity. Children count familiar pictures, choose the matching numeral and attach a clothespin to their answer. The same simple routine gives them practice with number recognition and the small hand movements needed to squeeze and release a clip.
The printable is designed for preschoolers, but the cards can also suit early kindergarten practice, a homeschool session or a quiet activity at home. You can introduce a few cards at a time and add more as your child becomes comfortable counting and matching quantities to numerals.

What children practice with the cards
Each card shows a group of summer-themed pictures and three possible numbers. A child counts the pictures, compares the total with the choices, then clips the number that matches. The pictures include sunshine, flip-flops, beach balls, seashells, ice cream cones and popsicles.
Counting is the central task, but the activity has a few parts. Children can point to each picture as they count, which helps them keep track of what they have already counted. They then have to recognize the written numerals and connect one of them to the quantity they found. Finally, opening and closing a clothespin gives their fingers a chance to practice controlled movement.
That combination makes the cards useful when you want one activity to cover more than a single skill. Still, the clothespin can be a challenge for a child whose hands are new to the motion. It’s fine to help with the clip or let the child point to an answer first; the counting and number matching can stand on their own while that movement develops.
What the printable includes
The PDF contains 20 cards covering the numbers 1 through 10. Each number appears on two cards, with different summer pictures. The download has 10 pages and includes both a color set and a black-and-white set.
- 20 color number clip cards.
- The same 20 cards in black and white.
- Two cards for each number from 1 to 10.
- 10 pages in the complete PDF.
You can print the color pages if you prefer the pictures as shown, or choose black and white when that suits your printer or activity setup. Children can also color the pictures on the black-and-white cards, adding a creative step before counting. Because both versions are included, you can pick the format that works for the day without changing the activity itself.

Prepare the cards for repeated use
Gather the printable, paper or cardstock, scissors and clothespins. A laminator is optional. Regular paper is enough to try the activity, while cardstock gives the cards a sturdier feel. If you expect to bring them out repeatedly or share them among several children, laminating can help them hold up to handling.
- Choose a version and print it. Select color, black and white, or the pages you want to use. Start with only a few cards if your child is new to counting.
- Cut the cards apart. Follow the outlines around each card.
- Laminate if you want extra durability. Cut the cards apart before laminating, then trim each one again, leaving a small sealed edge around it.
- Set out the clothespins. Put them with the cards in a basket or bag so the activity is ready when you need it.
Regular-size and mini clothespins can both work. The useful choice depends on what the child can comfortably pinch open and close. If the clip feels difficult, offer support or let the child answer without attaching it; the main learning task is counting the pictures and identifying the matching number.

Use a few cards at a time
Invite your child to choose a card and count each picture aloud, pointing to them one by one. When they reach the end, ask which of the three numbers shows that total. The child can then clip the clothespin onto the matching numeral.
If counting is still new, begin with cards that show smaller quantities and keep the rest aside. There’s no need to put all 20 cards on the table at once. A small selection can make it easier to focus on the counting process, and you can bring in more cards as your child is ready.
You can count together at first, model how to point to each picture once, and help with the clothespin. As the steps become familiar, let the child do more independently. If a child skips a picture or counts one twice, gently return to the images and count them together again.
The cards can fit into a summer preschool math center, homeschool preschool, kindergarten counting practice or a short activity at the kitchen table. They may also provide a quiet task while an older sibling works on a lesson, or something to do indoors on a hot or rainy day. The activity is easy to scale: offer one card for a brief practice session, or several for a longer turn.
